Some facts: - The flu is a virus (as opposed to a bacteria) that is passed through coughing and sneezing (aerosolized particles) and wiping you face with infected germy hands.
- The H1N1 "swine flu" is another strain of the "common, regular" flu. It will have its own vaccination this year in addition to the "regular" flu vaccine. Current recommendations are one shot of each vaccine except where noted (ask your health care professional).
Most at-risk populations: - Pregnant women
- Infants and their care givers
- All children age 6 months to 4 years
- Children with health problems aged 4 years to 19 years
- Health Care Workers, people who work around patients and ill persons
- Adults and elders with chronic health conditions such as COPD (emphysema), asthma, cancer, heart disease, cigarette smokers, kidney disease, etc.
What YOU can do: WASH YOUR HANDS OFTEN and don't touch your face! Make an appointment with your doctor and get prepared: do you have all your medicine refills? Do you have any emergency medicines you will need? Have a flu plan: your entire family or workplace may have the flu at the same time. Carry a hand sanitizer like Purel in your purse, in the car, in the house and at work. Call the your doctor if you feel like you have the flu and drink plenty of clear fluids. Avoid or deal with stress. Stress breaks down the immune system. Stay home! Avoid work and school if you have the flu! Wear a mask if you go out. Use a Neti Pot or Q - tip swab with salt water to clean your nostrils daily to decrease the viral count during the winter
